Hirsch’s celebrates their 40th birthday
PINESLOPES – From a single shop in Durban, Hirsch's Home Store celebrates 40 years with stores around the country
Margaret and Allan Hirsch started their appliance business in a tiny showroom on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, Durban, in 1979 with just R900 that they had saved.
Forty years later Hirsch’s has grown into a chain of mega-appliance, electronics and home furnishing stores in KwaZulu-Natal, Cape Town and Gauteng.
The Fourways branch was opened in 2002 and is the brand’s flagship store. The business, now also run by Hirsch children Richard and Luci, has won multiple awards for their service ethic.
Hirsch’s stores are not only places where one can shop for the home, but with their regular networking events, they have also become meeting places for business people, young mums, aspiring chefs and domestic workers.
Commenting on their milestone birthday on 29 January, Allan Hirsch, who serves as the company’s chief executive officer said, “I can’t believe that 40 years have passed since we started Hirsch’s.”
He continued, “The growth that we have had over the years and the people who have assisted us, and the support that we have had from the public for the last 40 years has been phenomenal.
“It’s true to say that working hard and getting the basics right on a daily basis pays. That is what we’ve done. We have had amazing people that have worked with us over the years, and we owe a lot to them.”
Allan added that he feels proud of what they have achieved and believes that there are more opportunities on their way – not only for the company but for South Africa.
“By looking after people, we have found that they have looked after us.
“When people ask me what the key to success is, I say that it is a combination of getting everything in the right order at the right time. When one consistently gets the basics done, one will become successful.
He concluded, “This being our 40th year, we have numerous specials. We have had great support from our suppliers who are helping us to enjoy our 40th year in business and we are passing these on to the consumer – who has kept us in business for the past 40 years.
“Thank you, we appreciate you, and we are so grateful that you have kept us going for all this time.”
