Joburgers help otter cub to get on the mend

JOBURG – The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary gives a little otter the right diet to help her grow strong. The cub had been confiscated from being kept illegally in captivity,

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has announced that an otter, which was kept illegally and fed the incorrect diet, is now responding well to medication.

The African clawless otter was confiscated by the Johannesburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Johannesburg SPCA).

“We asked [the public] to assist us with our #OneMeal campaign, which helped us greatly,” the veterinary hospital, which is based in Glenferness in the Kyalami area, said in a post on their Facebook page

“She is still receiving bottles, however, she is slowly being weaned off her bottles as she consumes (and becomes more interested) in eating tilapia.

“During the past few weeks, it was critical for us to ensure that we provided her with the right nutrition to ensure that she would grow and meet all the necessary developmental milestones.”
