Annual public speaking competition hosted at Bryanston Primary School

SANDTON – The Northcliff Rotary recently hosted a public speaking competition at Bryanston Primary School.

The Northcliff Rotary Club, in conjunction with Bryanston Primary School, recently hosted the club’s annual public speaking competition.

The acting principal of Bryanston Primary School, Morne Marx, welcomed the speakers, parents, and educators.

The competition is open to Grade 7s from both public and private primary schools.

Fourteen schools participated this year: Pridwin Preparatory School, Constantia Kloof, Bryanston Parallel Medium, Bryneven, Montrose, Sharonlea, De La Salle Holy Cross College, Franklin D Roosevelt, Northcliff, Risidale, Bryanston, Emmarentia, Crawford Preparatory Lonehill and Blairgowrie Primary.

Club President, Dr Jan Christoph Hadenfeldt said, “The club has been hosting this annual event for the past 37 years which has become a highlight in the primary school calendar over the years.”

The winner of the prepared speech category was Salifyanji Sichilongo of Constantia Kloof and the runner-up was Letago Makhafola of Emmerentia Primary, while the Impromptu category was won by Timothy Reynders of Bryneven Primary and the runner-up was Senathi Makola from Crawford Preparatory Lonehill.

The winning school on the night was Crawford Preparatory Lonehill.

Chief judge, Brian Appleton, from the National Eisteddfod Academy was impressed with the standard and quality of the speeches presented by the participants. He also went on to say that many of these youngsters, who excel in public speaking, emerge as future leaders within our communities.

The concluding address was given by Dean Gounden who distributed certificates and book prizes to the speakers. He awarded a framed plaque to Bryanston Primary, as the winners of the previous year, and thanked them for hosting the event.
