Bail granted to two Douglasdale police officers accused of corruption

DOUGLASDALE – This is why two Douglasdale officers appeared in court.

Two police officers of Douglasdale Police Station appeared in court on 23 November for alleged corruption.

According to the national spokesperson of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, Moses Dlamini, the two accused were granted bail of R1500 each.

“The case was remanded to 5 February next year for further investigation,” Dlamini said.

He added that the officers, one a constable and the other a sergeant, were stationed at Douglasdale Police Station and were arrested on 20 November in a joint operation by the directorate and the Metro police for corruption.

This after the complainant opened a case of extortion against Douglasdale police officers who had allegedly demanded R3 000 from him. In return, the officers guaranteed that they would not impound the complainant’s taxi and would not arrest his taxi driver for allegedly parking the taxi illegally on the street.

“An entrapment operation was arranged in line with the relevant prescripts.”

Dlamini added that the two officers were arrested for corruption and the constable was also charged with being in possession of unlicensed ammunition.

He said the sergeant managed to escape his arrest but was later apprehended before appearing in court.
