Pikitup catching up on rounds of waste collection in certain parts of the area

FOURWAYS– MMC explains why it takes Pikitup this long to collect waste in your neighbourhood.

Certain parts of Paulshof and Dainfern still have uncollected waste by Pikitup which is generating great concern from residents.

According to MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager, Pikitup was in the process of catching up on rounds that were not collected last week even so as working on weekends. “Our teams are working overtime every day. If there are areas where rubbish had not been collected residents must report to Pikitup.”

This is due to the failure to manage the transition of their ad hoc fleet contracts in Pikitup which serves to provide additional vehicles to the City to compensate for the attrition of Pikitup’s aged fleet.

De Jager explained that in the interim, Pikitup, through maximising its existing fleet and operating additional overtime shifts, will ensure that the maximum level of refuse removal rounds was achieved under the circumstances.

“In the past, the City has struggled with the timely management of contracts so as to ensure a smooth transition between the end of one contract and the commencement of another. This situation has been exacerbated by the advanced age and volatility of our existing fleet and this is a set of circumstances which have recently been condemned by the Mayor.”

Hence he requested a full investigation be instituted to determine the culpability of those responsible. “We cannot tolerate a situation where service delivery to our residents is compromised. I will ensure that Pikitup is issuing communication from our respective regional depots advising residents of the progress towards full operation.”

De Jager wished to apologise to residents for any inconvenience which they may experience and he will see to it that normal service operations are restored.

Pikitup’s Twitter feed depicts them making the rounds in various areas of Johannesburg as they have collected waste from the Midrand depot which included Kaylami Estates, Glen Austin ext 3, Commercial, Grand Central, Halfway House, Kaylami Hills Ext 4 and 8 Rabie Ridge, Klipfontein, Kanana Ext 5 and Mayibuye.
