Your career is your personal project, teaches speaker

According to the keynote speaker of the day, Grace Molatedi, the coaching session was to either enhance current skills or acquire new ones.

In commemoration of Women’s Month, Leeuwkop Correctional Services hosted a Gauteng Regional Women’s mentoring and coaching session.

The session was dedicated to the empowerment and celebration of women. It was also an opportunity for women in the regional correctional services to receive coaching and improve the individual performance of their daily jobs.

According to the keynote speaker of the day, Grace Molatedi, the coaching session was to either enhance current skills or acquire new ones. “Once the coachee successfully acquires the skills, the coach is no longer needed. Mentoring is development coaching and mentoring uses the same skills and approach. Coaching is short-term-based, however, mentoring is long term.”

Molatedi explained that was why it was very important for women to be mentored to be and do the best in their positions.

“When the women of South Africa converged at the Union Buildings 62 years ago, from every corner of South Africa, they created one of the enduring landmarks of our country’s history – that’s what happens when women come together.”

She noted violence against women was a serious and escalating evil in society.

“It’s both a part of the subordination of the women and consequences of that inequality. This pervasive violence against women has, as one of its most extreme expressions, the terrible phenomenon of serial murders. We must try our level best to eradicate this violence against women.”

Molatedi also touched on the importance of sisterhood and how women should pave the way for future generations of strong women and girls. “Creating awareness of gender equality is something the department and government as a whole have been working on a lot over the past years.

“This is due to the fact that women have always been disadvantaged and therefore, not represented enough in organisations, especially in senior management.”

She added, however, it is always disappointing to look around and realise that the same women we are looking to integrate into higher positions do not possess qualifications and are generally not assertive. “Colleagues, this is why your career is your personal project; you need to get fully involved in it.”

Molatedi concluded in saying that sisterhood is some form of leadership because it ensures leading, showing and teaching – one way or another.
