Female Douglasdale police officer doing great things in the community

DOUGLASDALE – A Douglasdale police officer is the only female in her group of men who conduct aggressive crime busts.

In commemoration of Women’s Day, we take a look into the lives of some incredible women in the area and one of these women is Douglasdale police officer, Constable Konanani Mukwevho.

Mukwevho is the only female officer in her squad of men who conduct crime busts and raids, among other duties.

“Being a female police officer in the service is good and challenging because you become a strong woman among men. I believe that it is a calling; not everyone can become one,” she expressed.

She explained that her daily duties are to conduct crime prevention campaigns, policing of crime hotspots, roadblocks, raiding shebeens, policing of special events and stop-and-search duties. “I am part of all the crime successes because we work as a team here at the Douglasdale Police Station,” she said.

Mukwevho shared that as a female police officer she faced many challenges at the workplace because other community members tend to sometimes undermine women. “They think that we cannot handle most situations and when it comes to arresting male suspects, they would become arrogant but as a strong woman I try my best to manage situations as smoothly as I can because I have to make sure that members of the community are safe at all times.”

She expressed that her line of work was noted not to be easy for a woman to perform the duties required, hence most female officers don’t do what she does as they fear for their lives. “I have no fear, I love my job,” she smiled.

Mukwevho’s advice to young women who have hopes to be in the service was to be a part of the police service so they can empower other women. “If more women join us, the nation will see that we are capable of anything and we can also be leaders.”

The strong female officer shared that she was a proud policewoman who lives to serve and protect her community with pride. “Being the only female in my group, I work working 12 hours a day, however, I take pride in being a woman in blue.”
