Female jogger needs closure, delays from Douglasdale police

DOUGLASDALE – This is how the raped female jogger feels because of no reply from Douglasdale police.

Since opening her case of rape at Douglasdale Police Station in March, a 42-year-old female jogger has not heard anything from the police at the station.

This after she was raped by two unknown males in a ditch area while jogging along Witkoppen Road near a filling station on 10 March.

According to the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, Douglasdale police have not seen her since she opened a case of rape in March. “When I call the station looking for the colonel handling my case, he tells me they haven’t done anything and this really hurts me that the police aren’t saying anything or giving me any feedback.”

She stated that the only thing she received on 16 May was an SMS which read, “We just wanted to give you feedback on your case, and we are still waiting to see if any DNA was found on the sexual evidence collection kit. No new information received on the identity of the suspects.”

Since her ordeal, she is scared to go for a jog in the area because she doesn’t know whether the suspects were still roaming around. “Chances are that they are still in the area, especially if the police cannot seem to find them.”

She said she has been to the station twice and was referred to a colonel who does not answer her calls or return them. “It really hurts as I have trauma from what happened to me. I even feel like I chose for this to happen to me hence I need closure.”

The victim highlighted that the rape ordeal was traumatic – it has now affected her work as she often wakes up in the middle of the night. “Fortunately, my husband is there for me and he is the reason why I still keep on going. I am also undergoing an employee assistance programme which has helped me not to be suicidal.”

The 42-year-old stated that what hurt her the most was that she keeps calling the station but no one seems to give her further information about the case or the status of the case. “More than anything, I feel as though I am the only one who wants the case solved – I am not getting the same sentiments from the police.”

With no reply from the police, she has now drawn her own conclusions. “I feel as though they chucked my case away; if they didn’t, I want them to do something, to show me something.”

With a heavy heart, the woman concluded and said, “Until something happens to you, you will never know how it feels.”

The head spokesperson of Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Mpho Tshetlhane stated that they were still awaiting the DNA results from the lab. “No one has been arrested yet and the case is still under investigation. We take the quality of our work very seriously and strive to give victims of crime the best support we can. If the complainant feels that she is not satisfied with the service rendered to her, she can come to the station and ask to see the head of detectives or coordinator for complaints against the police.”
