A man from Kyalami Estate has opened a case of fraud at the Midrand Police Station after R15 000 was stolen from his bank account.
Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said, “The complainant said that he opened his email on 20 July and found an email with the logo from his bank and a message that said he needed to validate his account within 48 hours otherwise it will be deactivated.
According to Tlamela, he clicked on the link to update the required details. “Later, he received a call from a person that said he needed to confirm his details via the app, which he proceeded to do. He then asked the caller if they were calling from the bank, but the caller did not respond.”
Tlamela said that this was the point he realised that he was being scammed and visited his bank. “While at the bank, he received an SMS to say that beneficiaries are being added to be paid. He then deactivated the internet access on his account, but unfortunately, R15 000 was already taken.”
Tlamela advised people to be alert at all times and not log onto any websites that they don’t understand. “When you receive an email like this, rather confirm with your bank that it is from them before proceeding.”
