Spotlight on illegal hunting, residents educated on how to treat animals

RIVERSANDS – The boys from Diepsloot say the reason behind the killing of the animals is that they have nothing else to do.

Illegal hunting has been plunged into the spotlight once more in the Kyalami area, with rabbits and birds being killed.

Community member, Mandy Collins said there have been two separate incidents of boys being caught hunting illegally in the area.

“One incident took place on 16 June in Riversands where a group of boys, along with their dogs, were caught hunting illegally by two security guards,” said Collins.

“The guards intercepted them and held them until the Midrand SPCA arrived at the scene.

“They were then given an education on the treatment of dogs and animals such as jackals and hares.”

Collins explained that the boys said they were ‘bored’ and had no activities hence they resorted to hunting animals.

The general manager of Midrand SPCA confirmed that they educated the three boys on hunting illegally. “We took in 13 dogs that the boys had with them during their hunt, as most of them are stray dogs.

“We now have them in our care and the parents of the boys can come fetch the dogs from us if they belong to them.”

The other incident saw two boys hunting illegally in Sun Valley. They were caught holding dead rabbits and birds on a stick.

She discouraged community members from hunting wildlife illegally as she said preserving animals is crucial.

The chairperson of the Greater Kyalami Conservancy, Kristin Kallesen, reiterated that illegal hunting was discouraged and it is important to preserve wildlife.

“We will stop at nothing to help protect the livelihood of these animals,” said Kallesen.
