Three #RolexGang members arrested for attempted murder following shoot-out with police

FOURWAYS – Suspected members of the notorious Rolex Gang were arrested yesterday on the R25 in Modderfontein following a shoot-out with police.

The Gauteng MEC for Community Saftey Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane and Acting-National Commissioner Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi have welcomed the arrest of three suspects and members of the notorious Rolex Gang after they were apprehended in possession of a hijacked vehicle on the R25 in Modderfontein on 19 June.

A shoot-out between the police and the suspects ensued on the R25 once the suspects realised that police were following them. One suspect sustained injuries while the other two were arrested unscathed.

The suspects will face charges of attempted murder, possession of a hijacked vehicle and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

During the arrest, police also recovered a Colt 45 pistol and ammunition, a 9mm Beretta pistol and ammunition, a .38 revolver, live ammunition and a 9mm hollow-point as well as a hammer.

Nkosi-Malobane said, “I am delighted with the arrest of the Rolex Gang members who have been terrorising the people of Gauteng for a very long time. The province has been hard-hit by the scourge of trio crimes in recent times and this arrest augurs well in our quest to deal decisively with trio crimes such as carjackings and robberies with aggravated circumstances.

“I am confident that with the evidence at the police’s disposal, they will be able to present a water-tight case to ensure that these suspects receive the highest possible terms behind bars… This will send the strong message that Gauteng has no room for criminals.”

The high-level team that saw the arrest of these suspects included the police’s Crime Intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) (Hawks), Saps K9 Unit, the Alexandra Trio Task Team, Gauteng Traffic Saturation Unit and the Tracker Connect Investigation Department.

Mfazi echoed Nkosi-Malobane’s sentiments stating that combating car hijackings as a category of trio crimes is a top priority. “This collaborative effort of various law enforcement agencies will, going forward, be incorporated in the normalisation approach that will ensure the sustainability of low levels of serious crime.”

National head of the DPCI, Lieutenant Godfrey Lebeya, who will be investigating the case said, “It is evident that when we coordinate our efforts, we will emerge victorious against the scourge of aggravated robberies.”
