Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa semi-finalist and Lonehill resident visits Baragwanath Hospital

LONEHILL– This is why your fellow resident and semi-finalist was visiting Baragwanath Hospital.

Passionate about children and health care, Lonehill resident and Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa semi-finalist, Adele Koolen paid a visit to Baragwanath Hospital’s pediatric surgical and burns unit.

She teamed up with eight-year-old twin brothers Sinjan and Christian Moffett, founders of Simple Sacks South Africa, to spread some love at the unit.

“I got involved with Surgeons For Little Lives (SFLL) in 2016 when I did JoBerg2c mountain bike race and last year I rode for them again to raise funds,” she said.

Koolen is an ambassador for the SFLL charity which launched in May 2015 as a registered non-profit organisation with a powerful commitment to saving the lives of sick children.

She explained that Simple Sacks offered a solution by providing bags filled with everyday necessities that impoverished people would otherwise not be able to buy.

“Members of the public and companies can then purchase these bags and distribute them to people in need as they come across them in their community. This could be to people living on the streets, unemployed people, charities and homes or even families they know who are struggling financially.”

Koolen highlighted that for the outreach they partnered up and the Simple Sacks was done for children aged between 0 to12 years. “The bags included basic necessities such as nappies, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, Vaseline and a packet of crayons/ colouring pencils for the older children. Forty bags together with some cupcakes were distributed, and the smiles made the effort so much more satisfying.”

She concluded that they were looking at doing another outreach for Mandela Day as the aim was to supply both children and mother with a bag at the hospital.
