Mother dog on the road to recovery

FOURWAYS – Rescued mother dog, Penny, has undergone a successful operation to remove her leg. She is recovering well.

Ark Animal Centre announced this week that their injured mother dog, Penny, has successfully undergone an operation to amputate her leg.

Penny was recently rescued from a scrap yard and brought to the centre with her two puppies.

Marketing manager at the centre Candice Eilertsen said, “When Penny arrived she was terrified and aggressive. We actually had to muzzle her. She had a badly broken leg which had caused her immense pain.”

After taking her to the vet for X-rays in the hope of fixing her leg, they discovered that her injury was too old and her bones had already fused, with the shortened tendons causing her much pain.

Fortunately, Penny took a liking to centre founder Tracy Otto and soon adjusted to life at the centre in the knowledge that she was now in a place of love and safety.

“Her operation went phenomenally well. Already in recovery, we could see she was far more comfortable and in less pain. She’s since adapted very quickly to walking on three legs – in fact, we actually think she walks better on three than when she had the gammy leg,” said Eilertsen.

Penny will still need further rehabilitation to help her get used to moving with a missing limb.

“Our community is the best. Everyone has been rooting for Penny on Facebook and Instagram. She has a whole Penny cheer team. The messages and love that’s been sent to this precious girl are overwhelming.”

She added that they have received some donations to help with the rehabilitation and food costs and would greatly appreciate any further help in this regard.

“Penny has inspired us all to be grateful for what we have with her positive attitude even in tough situations. She is amazing!”
