Penny and her two puppies were recently rescued from a scrap yard and taken to the centre in Fourways.
Candice Eilertsen, marketing manager at the centre said Penny was in a bad way when she arrived. “She was terrified and aggressive. We actually had to muzzle her. She also has a badly broken leg which was causing her immense pain.”
After taking Penny for X-rays at the vet in the hope of fixing her leg, they discovered that the injury was too old and her bones had already fused, with the shortened tendons causing her much pain.
Eilertsen said Penny is currently on painkillers and will start physiotherapy soon to get the movement back in her leg, otherwise the leg will most likely need to be amputated.
“It’s going to be a long road for her, but we will be there with her every step of the way until she is ready to be adopted.”
Penny has fortunately taken a liking to centre founder Tracy Otto. “From having to be muzzled because she was so aggressive and terrified, she now wags her tail whenever she sees Tracy and is slowly wagging her tail when she sees other staff too.
“It’s wonderful to watch animals like Penny come in not knowing what kindness is, and seeing the transformation and the realisation that this is their life now – food, shelter, love and care. It makes all hard work of keeping the shelter running worth it.”
