Pageant semi-finalists put the spotlight on recycling

With the spotlight on recycling, five Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa semi-finalists – who are all Fourways residents – participated in a recycling challenge.

This was in a bid to help raise awareness about recycling for their chosen community project, Forest Farm – a centre for people with cerebral palsy.

This was thanks to a partnership between Mpact Recycling and Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa pageant which saw the five Fourways residents – Adele Koolen, Enolicia Strever, Sherry James, Karen McKenzie and Shaney Snell – create awareness and educate the community about the importance of recycling.

According to Koolen, they were required to work alongside Mpact Recycling on community projects with the aim to promote recycling awareness, support fundraising initiatives and increase recycling volumes.

“This project has not only created more awareness with myself but I loved being able to contribute to such a worthy community project such as Forest Farm home for cerebral palsy.”

The partnership sees the recycling company offering a solution that allows businesses to recycle their paper and paper packaging in an environmentally responsible manner and free of charge.

“Looking after our environment is so important and Mpact recycling is doing a phenomenal job in bringing awareness of this as well as giving back to communities at the same time,” Sherry James said.

Another semi-finalist, Mckenzie highlighted that these programmes continue to heighten awareness and push recycling levels to new highs and said it was an awesome initiative to have been involved in.

With what they experienced Strever said, “Recycling is crucial and even the smallest step can have significant benefits for our environment. Help us Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa, together with Mpact-The Leading Paper Recycler, to make a difference,”

The beauties’ mission was to generate ten tonnes of recycling for the Forest Farm community so that they benefit financially from the money Mpact Recycling paid for recycled material.

What can be recycled?

• Any form of paper (white and colour)
• Office and shredded paper
• Envelopes
• Newspapers
• Magazines and brochures (including glossy varieties)
• Cardboard boxes of any kind e.g. cereal, dry food, tissue boxes
• Roll cores – toilet roll and paper towel cores
• Old telephone directories and books
• Paper gift wrap
• Egg cartons
• Milk and juice cartons

Companies are encouraged to help and the five beauties need your recycling support to help them reach their target. They are not limited to 10 tonnes – the greater the recycling volume they generate the larger their proceeds to their community project.

Snell concluded that being part of this recycling journey has not only influenced her but her family as well.

“I believe charity starts at home, making friends and family aware of the recycling movement has had such a positive impact towards the environment and personally. We are now filled with gratitude towards the environment and everyone involved to make this movement a success.”
