Placement starts for next year’s Grade 1s and 8s

JOBURG – The education department has started placing Grade 1s and 8s in schools

The online registrations for next year’s Grade 1s and 8s officially closed on 28 May with over half a million applications processed.

The Gauteng Department of Education said it will now start the placement process and schools will send offers of placement to parents from 18 July to 3 August. During this period, parents will receive SMS notifications regarding the status of their applications, the department said.

“Parents should note that availability of space is the key determinant of how many children can be placed in a school. Placement will be conducted in compliance with admissions criteria and on a first-come-first-served basis.”

The department will facilitate placement of children who could not be placed in schools between August and October.

Based on the number of applications registered to date, there are 596 schools where demand exceeds available spaces. Some of the schools in these areas have recorded between 1 538 and 1 960 applications for either Grade 1 or Grade 8.

If the school a parent applied for reaches full capacity, the system would have alerted the applicant and advised them to apply to other schools as well.
