- ‘K’ word black businessman case postponed
The case against a businessman, Peter-Paul Ngwenya was postponed at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court. Ngwenya appeared briefly before Magistrate Pravina Rugoonandan on 24 May. Defence attorney, Bevin Ndebele requested the matter to be postponed in order for him to go through the transcripts. Ndebele told the court that he only received the transcripts on 23 May, the day before the court appearance.
- Rugoonandan granted the postponement and the matter has been remanded to 27 June in order for the defence to presents its case in court.
Ngwenya is charged with crimen injuria and contravening a protection order that his business associate, Fana Titi had obtained against him. Titi is understood to have obtained the order following a threatening message that Ngwenya had sent to him (Titi) and his business partner Aqueel Patel.
- Attempted rape
A 53-year-old Diepsloot man, Velaphi Dingann Nkosi appeared briefly at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on a charge of attempted rape. The state is alleging that the accused attempted to rape his five-year-old neighbour in Diepsloot.
It is alleged that Nkosi tried to rape the five-year-old in a toilet. The little girl is understood to have been saved by her family member who was looking for her after being worried about her whereabouts.
The family member looked for the little girl and after calling out her name, the girl came out of their toilet. Shockingly, the accused also came out of the same toilet. Nkosi told the family member that he used their toilet as his was occupied by someone and he had a runny tummy so he couldn’t wait. Asked on why he was in the toilet with the little girl, Nkosi apparently couldn’t give answers.
The little girl had R1,50 in her possession and told her family that she was given the money by malume (uncle), who is the accused. The little girl also told her family that malume touched her on her private parts and had his pants down when she was called by her aunt. The police were immediately called and Nkosi was arrested.
The accused is currently out on R2 000 bail and is residing with his relatives, away from Diepsloot until finalisation of the case.
The matter has been remanded to 29 May for the trial date to be set.
- Possession of an unlicensed firearm
The case against 27-year-old foreign national, Nkosinathi Ndebele was postponed at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court. Ndebele is accused of being in possession of an unlicensed semi-automatic firearm. He was arrested in July last year by police in Diepsloot during a routine crime prevention operation. He has been in custody since his arrest.
The accused is facing a further charge of contravening the immigration act of the country as the state alleged that he entered the country without having legal documents to do so.
His case has been remanded to 29 May for a trial date to be set and also for services of an Ndebele interpreter to be secured.
- Court acquits man of fraud and theft charge
The Randburg Magistrates’ Court acquitted a man accused of fraud and theft. The state alleged that in 2015, the accused allegedly stole and defrauded his employer of R530 000.
The accused was employed as a bookkeeper at a Ferndale-based company, also operating in Mauritius. The state alleged that the accused unlawfully and intentionally represented facts to his employer when he transferred R530 000 from his employer’s account into his bank account, after convincing them that the money will be transferred to their Mauritius account much quicker if he used his account. It is understood that the money never reached the Mauritius account. However, the court found the man not guilty on a charge of fraud and theft.
