Peacock looking for a loving home

SUNNINGHILL – Residents at the Riverside Retirement Village are appealing to the public to help find a new home for a male peacock which was abandoned in the area.

Sunninghill resident Norma Rockett is appealing to the public for help in rehoming an abandoned peacock.

The male bird appears to live in the area around her retirement village, Riverside Retirement Manor.

“I think he was abandoned here by whoever owned him,” said Rockett.

“He wanders around the general area but cannot stay here as he disturbs the neighbours.”

Peacocks are not recommended as pets for a number of reasons: they are noisy and have a loud and penetrating call; they like to wander in large areas and so will be unlikely to stay inside a certain yard or property; they forage for food and thus will dig up gardens and they will leave droppings in their wake.

Can you give a good home to this male peacock?

Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, there have been complaints. Rockett and the retirement village’s committee, though, are more worried about the well-being of the animal.

“I like him, I like looking out of my window and seeing him,” Rockett said.

“But what I fear is that he might get hurt. Also, while he gets vegetables from our kitchen each morning, he should also be eating other things too and be cared for.”

Over the past few months, Rockett has called every organisation she could think of for help but to no avail.

“We would love to know that he’s in the right place for him and maybe even with others of his kind.”

If you can help, please call Linda Venter, general manager at Riverside Retirement Village on 011 234 7157 or 083 256 5282.
