Fourways model dreams of being the queen

CRAIGAVON – Leyla van Greuning (19) has entered the very prestigious Mr King and Miss Queen of South Africa pageant. The Fourways Review sat down with her to find out about her journey.

Craigavon resident and modelling teacher Leyla van Greuning is one of 23 finalists competing to win the Mr King and Miss Queen of South Africa modelling competition, and the winner will be announced after the finals on Youth Day.

“I started modelling four years ago to help build my confidence,” the 19-year-old told Fourways Review. “It really is my passion, as I can get on that ramp and forget about everything else.”

Van Greuning currently teaches children aged four and up at the Vogue Modelling School in Fourways, and hopes to study psychology at university in the future.

She is one of 23 finalists left in the competition – 13 men competing for the title of Mr King of South Africa, and 13 women competing for the title of Miss Queen – which she describes as the third biggest pageant in the country. The two winners will have the chance to represent South Africa internationally.

“It’s a very prestigious competition, almost like a mini Miss South Africa. I’ve never entered anything this intense, and it’s been a great opportunity to learn and grow.”

The selection process has been gruelling – numerous auditions, screenings and interviews were held regionally to select the top 23 finalists, and then these finalists attended a boot camp from 6 until 8 April in Pretoria where everything from fitness to modelling skills was assessed by the judges.

The final of the competition will be held on Youth Day, 16 June, at the Sun Carousel Hotel and the top-class show will be dedicated to Mandela’s 100-year centenary.

But before the finale, Van Greuning is excited about the philanthropy that she and the other contestants will get to do during the journey. She added that she wants to help charities to make a difference in as many lives as possible.

“Of course everyone goes in wanting to win, but for me, it is more of a platform. I want to make connections and have a voice. Of course, you don’t need a sash to do that, but it helps!” Van Greuning concluded.
