Community members are urged to report all crime incidents in the area to the police.
Community Policing Forum Sector 2’s, Natasha Levenderis said, “We encourage everyone to report crime [incidents] as they are used as statistics by the police. If people do not report the crimes in the area, the stats become skewed.”
Head of communications for the Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Mpho Tshetlhane said in the case of attempted crime, residents needed to go to the nearest police station to open a docket.
“When at the station, community members will be issued with a case number which is also required if they want to claim from insurance for damages to property. This also helps us with crime stats for the area,” she said.
“If the Douglasdale area has 10 attempted residential break-in incidents in a month, and no one reported them, we as the police will not have an idea that Douglasdale is a crime hotspot which will contribute to the lack of response or the ability to allocate resources accordingly.”
Tshetlhane warned residents about reporting a made-up crime to claim for insurance purposes or other reasons. “We take reported crimes very seriously and if community members lie or create a hoax around a crime related matter, we will not take it kindly as the police.”
