5 things to note about Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s funeral proceedings

JOBURG – As the nation gathers to bid farewell to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela today, here are five things to note about the proceedings.

1.

Members of the Madikizela family gathered at the Mother of the Nation’s Orlando West home at 6.30am this morning for a private viewing of her body, according to IOL.

2.

The hearse that bore Madikizela-Mandela’s coffin to Orlando Stadium was the same one that carried her late former husband, Nelson Mandela. This is according to our national publication, The Citizen.

3.

Thousands have gathered at Orlando Stadium in Soweto this morning to honour Madikizela-Mandela and by 11am, the stadium was packed to capacity so people were diverted to the Orlando Rugby Stadium, according to SABC News.

4.

Gauteng Premier David Makura said, “It is true irony of history that one of the brutal and vicious oppressive regimes of the 20th Century, the apartheid state, could not cower her, or crush her. Racism and patriarch could also not destroy her. Death has also not defeated her either. Human mortality is too weak to put her down because her powerful and defiant voice still echos today. It is therefore definitive and apt to say, Mama Winnie, she did not die, she multiplied.”
