UPDATE: Road closures for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s funeral service at Fourways Memorial Park

FOURWAYS – There will be road closures which will affect William Nicol Drive via Witkoppen and Cedar roads and Inchanga Road on the route to Fourways Memorial Park.

Planning and preparations are underway for the funeral of struggle stalwart, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela at Fourways Memorial Park on 14 April.

According to a statement by the police, there will be a 19-gun salute for Madikizela-Mandela and residents were warned that the loud bangs might affect people suffering ill-health, the elderly and little children.

Jean Berdou of Future City Fourways  said, “An event of this type involves a very substantial amount of planning and activity from a wide range of parties including family, the state, international relations and many more.”

Berdou added that due to the funeral procession there would be road closures which would affect William Nicol Drive via Witkoppen and Cedar roads and Inchanga Road on the route to Fourways Memorial Park. These will be temporarily closed from about 12.30pm to about 2.30pm.

“These times will be subject to alteration due to any delays in proceedings, as residents will not be allowed to enter or exit [Fourways Memorial Park] from 11.30am to 3pm.”

Berdou called upon the community to be tolerant and obey law enforcement agencies on 14 April. “Residents should make careful plans to avoid traffic closures and congestion as well as to plan for several indicated roads being completely closed for various periods ranging from half to several hours. Let us show as a community we can do this with cooperation and dignity.”
