Do you have head injuries that are undiagnosed?

Untreated head injuries could lead to an array of health issues in future. With celebrating World Head Injury Awareness Day this week, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Why are head injuries overlooked?

In some instances, when a vehicle comes to a sudden stop, the sudden deceleration shakes the brain – resulting in internal injuries of the brain tissue of the passenger or driver. This may happen without the victim bumping their head. Because these injuries may not be visible to the eye they are commonly overlooked.

Physical consequences of brain injuries include:

  • Changes in senses of smell or taste
  • Changes in hearing ability
  • Decreased ability to sense touch, pain and temperature
  • Problems with walking, dressing, activities of daily living and speech
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Exaggerated effects of drugs and/or alcohol
  • Headache
  • Post-traumatic epilepsy

Mental/ emotional consequences of brain injuries include:

  • Difficulties in coping with activities of daily living
  • Effects on the victim’s career or relationships
  • Lack of concentration
  • Inability to manage stress
  • Changed personality and behavioural patterns
  • Impulsiveness
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Being easily overloaded by your environment
  • Distraction
