Help donate learning containers and mobile toilets for school children of Riversands Primary School

RIVERSANDS – Read what the children of Riversands Primary School are in need of.

Teaching children how to learn and read English is the core mission of The Link @Riversands, a literacy support programme, which benefits 60 of the 240 Grade 2 children of Riversands Primary School.

With this mission at hand, the primary school which is situated on the corner of Mnandi Road and the R511, is in need of learning containers due to overcrowded classrooms and mobile toilets as there are only 10 toilets at the school.

According to the manager of the programme at Riversands Angela Wilson, “We work with 60 of the 240 Grade 2 children as we take 30 children at each of the two 35-minute sessions on a Monday and Tuesday from 8am to 10am. The programme teaches children how to read and learn how to pronounce English words.”

Wilson added that they would love to work with the children one on one but this is not possible at present, due to a shortage of volunteers. “We currently have about 35 volunteers who help teach the two groups of children.”

Wilson explained that she has run the programme for the past seven years at the school. “We are currently teaching the children in the old crèche that the school gave us and that still doesn’t house enough children for our learning programme hence we only teach a small number of children,” she said. “This is why we are in need of learning containers which will help with space for the programme.”

She added that the school has dedicated teachers who give their best despite the conditions but are hampered by the lack of decent facilities such as toilets and overcrowded classrooms. “The department of education has been dealing with the principal of the school and has provided the school with more teachers but the problem is the lack of space for these children,” Wilson said.

“Perhaps the reason why there aren’t any construction upgrades done at the school is because Century Properties together with the government plan to do some developments on these premises as they promised to build a new school for us across the road near the Diepsloot area.

“I urge community members out there to make a difference to a child’s life by volunteering two hours of their time per week, as we are in need of more volunteers.”
