The Metro police conducted operation Buya Mthetho as 21 taxis were impounded on Leslie Road and William Nicol Drive in Bryanston on 5 March. Of the taxis impounded, six were found to be stolen.
Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent, Wayne Minnaar stated that of the 21 taxis impounded, six were identified positively as stolen taxis. “This was after the drivers of the taxis were caught driving on the wrong side of the road as well as operating without valid licence discs on Leslie Road and William Nicol Drive in Bryanston,” Minnaar said.
Operation Buya Mthetho commenced on 1 March and a total number of 58 minibus taxis have been impounded. “Commuter safety is one of our priorities as Easter is upon us.”
Minnaar concluded that the stolen taxis were towed to the Aeroton Police Pound for verification and the owners will have to be arrested.
