Soil erosion a problem in Lonehill, says Ward 94 councillor, David Foley

LONEHILL – Ward 94 councillor, David Foley talks about soil erosion. Read here for more information.

Preserving the community is of great significance to Ward 94 councillor, David Foley, who shared his concerns regarding the soil erosion at the Lonehill stream, which has allowed strong waters to negatively impact the Lonehill dam and park.

“The Lonehill stream has continued to be eroded by strong water flows for a number of years, based on the growth or development in the area. From the top of Lonehill, there is quite a slope and the Lonehill dam and park are impacted by the strong water flows,” Foley said.

He added that a large amount of water flowing through the stream has been impacting the river banks, which has caused roots of trees or water pipes to be exposed, washing away the banks.

“This is a major concern as the bridge further up from the park had to be removed as two of the posts were at the point of collapse,” Foley explained.

He further added that the only resolution is the full rehabilitation of the river with gabions and the rebuilding of the bridge. “The bridge has forced that the Lonehill Parkrun be rerouted, which has caused some bottlenecks on the route.

“Unfortunately, there is no budget for the rehabilitation of the area from City Parks and Zoos at the moment, as reported after various engagements and onsite visits,” Foley said.

“Although it has been in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for at least ten years. a new bridge will need to built and we will be starting a donation fund for the bridge. Community members who wish to donate, please email, ward94jhbmetro@gmail.com to send your pledge.”

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo are yet to give comment on this story.
