Fourways Gardens lends a helping hand

FOURWAYS GARDENS – Fourways Gardens Residential Estate used the money they raised last Nelson Mandela Day to stock the Mahlasedi School and Day Care for this year. Find out more here.

Fourways Gardens Residential Estate raised money for the Mahlasedi School in Diepsloot during last year and were able to stockpile their toys and stationery for the new school year.

The funds were raised on Nelson Mandela Day. The estate, in conjunction with the Clubhouse and Copperlake Brewery, hosted a potjiekos competition in July of last year where residents could enter and sell their food to neighbours and friends. They also hosted a retro disco evening where residents could dress up and make donations.

“The estate raised about R9 200 on the day. But we felt that just handing over the money mid-year was not the best idea and approached the school about purchasing their stationery for the 2018 school year instead,” explained Elmine Durandt, the communications and events manager for Fourways Gardens.

“At the beginning of the year, we contacted the principal of the school, Lucy Raphela, to ask her what she needed for the school. Her needs were so simple that we decided to take her along on a shopping spree in early January!”

The shoppers decided to visit Westpack, where they stocked up on toys and stationery for the children.

The children received toy balls, scooters and other goodies.

“Within a few minutes of the shopping, it became clear that my car would not be big enough for all our shopping,” said Durandt. “So the Fourways Gardens maintenance team had to bring the truck. The goods were then driven to Diepsloot, where the team also helped Raphela unpack.”

The 10 bikes and balls that had been bought were a big hit with the little ones. The crayons, paper, puzzles and more educational toys will also be put to good use.

“On behalf of Mahlasedi Day Care, I would like to say thank you for the educational and entertainment toys Fourways Gardens Estate residents have bought for the school,” said Raphela of the donation. “Your support helps us to make a difference in a child’s future.”

After sharing this story, Durandt implored readers to also get involved in their community.

“I urge anyone reading this article to please get involved with a needy school or project. It is so easy to say that we do not know where or how, but people are in need all around us. Chat with your helper or gardener or speak to your church. There are wonderful people around us that make a big difference in many lives with a little help from you and me!”

The children of the Mahlasedi School in Diepsloot start their year the right way.
The hula-hoops are especially popular.
The schoolchildren are excited to play with their new toys.

Fourways Gardens first got involved with the Mahlasedi School and Day Care in 2016, when resident Claire Rose learned about it from her domestic worker and approached the housing complex to ask if they could support the school for Mandela Day of that year.
