The man accused of killing two Metro police officers was denied bail at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.
He stands accused of killing two on-duty Metro police officers, Winnie Mokgolo (35) and Sophie Ngoasheng (45) on 29 January on Witkoppen Road in Fourways.
The officers were conducting a roadblock when the man allegedly ploughed into them driving a Toyota Hilux.
Magistrate Renier Boshoff told the accused that what he submitted in his affidavit failed to give facts on substantial reasons that would permit his release on bail. Boshoff pointed out that the only fact before the court was that two people were killed.
In his affidavit in support of his bail application, the accused told the court that he has been on medication since December and suggested that the medication could have played a role in the incident.
Boshoff said the court found it hard to accept his defence on the medication issue. The magistrate said he will consider another bail application by the accused should he bring new facts. Confirmation by a doctor that he is on medication might be one of those facts he can bring, should he decide to make another bail application.
The case was remanded to 29 March for further investigations. The state is still waiting for postmortem results and the accused’s blood results.
Defence attorney, Letlhogonolo Mashifane said he has not yet received instructions from the accused on whether to appeal or make another bail application.
