Ward 96 councillor shares hopes and dreams for 2018

CHARTWELL – Read what Ward 96 councillor, Sbusiso Mthembu plans to do this new year.

With the new year upon us, Ward 96 councillor, Sbusiso Mthembu shares his hopes and dreams for the ward.

“This new year, I would love that the ward has law-abiding residents and motorists on our roads, mainly on the issue of bad driving behaviour along Cedar Road and illegal advertising boards on the streets. The areas badly affected by illegal advertising boards are Chartwell, Broadacres and Farmall,” Mthembu said.

He added that how he planned to eradicate bad driving behaviour on the roads was to enforce road rules abidance through Metro police visibility along Cedar Road on the main intersections such as Cedar and Valley roads, as well as Cedar Road and Fourways Boulevard.

“The illegal advertising boards will be dealt with by applying outside advertising board bylaws, which will be a part of the monthly clean-up campaign, A Re Sebetseng,” he said.

Mthembu added that what community members can expect from him is to attend more residents association meetings which he will use to gather issues or complaints so that they are addressed. “Issuing more newsletters and articles through local newspapers to ensure that residents know where and how to get hold of the councillor.”

He added that what he would like to do this year, which he was unable to do last year, is to address the water issue for the Chartwell north community. “I would like to ensure that the community is isolated from the popular Talevara pipe so that they are able to draw water directly from Steyn City’s reservoir. This will ensure minimum impact when the Talevara pipe bursts.”

He concluded by saying that his ward is a very diverse ward made up of five informal settlements, which are Kya Sands, Msawawa, Lion Park, Malatjie and Diepsloot extensions 12 and 13.

“There are two agricultural holdings namely, Farmall and Chartwell and three suburbs, which are Broadacres, Dainfern and Steyn City. Balancing diverse communities’ needs becomes a challenge with very limited resources and a ward councillor having to wear three hats. There is a sense that while attending to some community needs the others are being neglected.”
