First day of school for children of Unity College

CHARTWELL – Read what the principal of Unity College had to say about the first day of school.

It was back to school for the children of Unity College, a special needs school based in Chartwell.

With its mission to realise the full potential of children and young adults with special educational needs through the provision of high-quality education, the school’s vibe ensured that they equip each child with skills to become productive, independent members of society.

When asked how he felt about the children starting their first day the principal, Bruce Lindsay said, “For the new children who are arriving here, it is a wonderfully exciting experience for them because due to the nature of our children a lot of them have never been in a formal school environment. So this is amazing for them as they feel that they are in a real school and part of the society.”

Lindsay added that for their current schoolchildren it was the excitement of the new advancements in their curriculum as well as seeing their friends again.

He added that what parents should expect from their children’s education this year was a slow and steady progress with the individual development plans (IDPs) which are coming very soon. “This is where we map out what our expectations are as a school and the parents are very excited about that because they foresee the progress that is to come.”

Lindsay concluded that as their educational philosophy is holistic and integrated Unity College is a dedicated centre of excellence for the education of children who have difficulty in accessing the normal mainstream curriculum. “It stands on three legs which are the achievement on academic milestones, the growth of social interaction and the growth of the personality which is the emotional side of the child.”
