Police are keeping an eye on protesting workers in Diepsloot

DIEPSLOOT– Protesting workers blocked a major road in Diepsloot. This is the reason why ...

Frustrated workers of a construction company, who are fixing the roads in Diepsloot, blocked the streets opposite Diepsloot Mall with burning tyres in the early hours of the morning.

According to Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, the workers blocked the R556 between Steyn City and Diepsloot with burning tyres because they have apparently not been paid for the past four months.

“The workers blocked the road and demanded to speak to the mayor. They were told that the mayor was not the relevant person to address their wage dispute as they were hired by a private company,” Mamonyane said.

She added that they managed to find the project manager who promised to see the workers later today.

“We have since opened the road and the Metro police and police will remain in the area until the matter is resolved,” Mamonyane said.

She added that the workers threatened that the protest will continue until they are told when they will be paid.
