Bryanston resident receives Cub award

BRYANSTON– Read what it takes to win a Leaping Wolf award.

Amy Rigden, a Bryanston resident from the first Bryanston Cub Pack, was recently presented with her leaping wolf badge.

The leaping wolf is the highest award a Cub can earn and must be completed before their 11th birthday when they move up to the Scout Troop.

According to one of the leaders of the pack, Gary Pienaar, to earn this prestigious award, Amy, who also attends Bryanston Primary School, had to complete a number of special tasks and projects.

“The tasks included a community greening project, as well as finding out about a topical global issue and what could be done about it and learning about different technologies,” Pienaar said.

He added that for her technology in action challenge, Amy learned all about solar energy, helped her family install solar panels at home, and did a short presentation on the benefits to the other children in the cub pack.

Another leader in the pack, Marisa Rakic said the leaping wolf award takes a significant amount of individual effort and dedication.

Rakic said, “This is a personal challenge that the child works on independently of the structured Cub programme which is provided during our weekly meetings, and this starts to develop basic planning and leadership skills. Amy becomes the fourth member of the pack to have been awarded the leaping wolf this year.

“Membership is open to both boys and girls. Anyone wishing to find out more about Scouting, please visit the provided website or they can contact their their Gauteng Provincial office.”
