FOURWAYS – Gloria Mthunzi has been chosen as Hirsch's domestic of the year, not long after she had a rose named after her. Find out more here.

Hirsch’s Fourways hosted its celebration high tea for the domestic worker of the year on 22 November and Gloria Mthunzi was named overall winner.

Domestic workers from Sandton, Midrand, Fourways and Lonehill, who have won monthly awards throughout the year, were invited to attend the special event to find out who would be named the domestic of the year.

Each monthly winner received a R300 voucher.

Their employers were also invited to the celebration and attendees got to enjoy fresh coffee, juice and sweet treats during and after the event at Hirsch’s Fourways store.

“Today is important because there are lots of domestic workers in the area,” explained Sharron Dingle of Hirsch’s. “I’m very proud of all [the] winners.”

During the celebration, Samu Gumbi, a Fourways ‘mom-preneur’, spoke to the women about how having a positive mindset can lead to a better life.

“You get out of life what you put in. It’s all in the mind,” Gumbi said.

Margaret Hirsch, the Hirsch’s group chief operations executive, came through on the day as well and handed over a brand new Salton Kettle and one of her cookbooks to each of the 11 domestics.

The domestic workers who are honoured, their employers, trainers who have worked with the group during the year and Hirsch’s staff members are present for the awards.

Mthunzi was awarded a R5 000 gift voucher.

“I would like to thank my bosses for letting me come here today,” Mthunzi said. “They don’t take me as just a domestic worker, but also see what’s in my heart.”

Mthunzi’s win comes hot on the heels of having a rose named after her. Her employer Vivienne Black entered the Ludwig’s Roses competition, Have a rose named after you. Black won the competition and she chose to name a rose Gloria after Mthunzi.

The domestic worker competition resumes in January next year.
