Everything you need you know about Antibiotics

We have all taken them, but what do they actually do and how do we properly use them.

What is an antibiotic?

  • Medication that is given to you to kill or prevent growth of bacteria causing a bacterial infection attacking your immune system

When should you get an antibiotic?

  • After consulting with a doctor and there is confirmation of a bacterial infection
  • There is not always a need to take an antibiotic; symptomatic treatment is very effective if there is no bacterial infection present.
  • The common cold/ flu does not require treatment with antibiotic

Important things to remember when taking antibiotics

  • Storage conditions: Suspensions must be stored in a refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius where indicated.
  • Complete the course: It is very important to ensure that you complete the full course of an antibiotic as prescribed by your doctor, failure to do this may lead to resistance to antibiotics
  • Probiotic: it is advisable to take a probiotic when taking an antibiotic to replace the “good bacteria” (natural flora) as antibiotic can kill good bacteria as well.
    • Take responsibility for your well being, always ask questions regarding how to take antibiotics to ensure optimal efficacy (e.g. know if the antibiotic prescribed to you is to be taken before or after meals).

The future of Antibiotics

  • There are few antibiotics available to treat resistant bacteria strains, the more antibiotics we use now, the less there are available for complicated infections and the more resistant bugs get to antibiotics.
  • Our time with Antibiotics is running out, we all play a crucial role in minimizing the use of antibiotics where it’s not necessary.
