An ordinary person doing extraordinary things in Fourways and surrounds

KYASANDS – Donations left at the donations box outside Broadacres Spar in Fourways are given to township communities.

Klarika Nettleton, also known as Nomsa, has been part of the Bloubosrand Community Forum and Animal Welfare Group for many years, as well the Ian Tarr Project.

“Ian Tarr was shot and killed outside Broadacres Spar in 2005,” Nettleton explained. “His family owns the Spar and as such have placed a donation box outside [the shop] in his memory.”

Patrons are encouraged to place goods and animal food items in the box which will go towards neglected animals in local townships.

On 26 October, Nettleton and Sergeant Nicholus Mokwena of the Douglasdale Police Station gathered all the donated goods received and transported them to the Msawawa informal settlement in Kyasands.

“We do these sorts of handouts every three weeks or so.”

During these township visits, Nettleton hands out animal care goods to residents who need them to feed and care for their pets, while Mokwena uses the opportunity to engage with his community.

Mokwena said, “When we’re out, I hand out pamphlets about safety and crime to the community. This week I handed out information about domestic violence, drugs and contact details for the local police station. I also ask if they want to tell the police anything.”

The majority of donations are received from Broadacres Spar on Cedar Road and because donations are small, Nettleton shares out portions of packets to community members that she knows and who care for a number of animals within the townships.

Nettleton said, “Also, when I have clothes for children and adults with me, I’ll also share them out as well.”

“I do this work because I really believe in South Africa becoming a humane society. In order to create paradise on earth, we need to show kindness and compassion on every level, starting with how we treat animals.

“I am so thankful to the Fourways community who give so generously every week. I couldn’t do this work without them.”
