#ICYMI: Escaped inmate still on the run

FOURWAYS – Thomas Marubini who escaped from the Leeuwkop Correctional Centre is still on the run.

Police confirmed that the manhunt for an Alexandra man who escaped from Leeuwkop Correctional Centre on 10 August is still underway.

Thomas Marubini (23) was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in 2015 after he was found guilty on a charge of robbery.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said Marubini has not been spotted in Alex. “As far as we know, [no one] has come forward with new information and we are still investigating,” he said.
Gauteng Correctional Services spokesperson Ofentse Morwane said it is still unclear how Marubini managed to escape.

Morwane added that Marubini was part of a group of men who were working at the prison’s piggery when he escaped.
“An internal investigation has also been launched to determine how the escape occurred. The department views this as a serious breach of its security measures and will continue to assess and re-assess its security strategies and plans to prevent such incidents in future,” said Morwane.

Leeuwkop Correctional Centre spokesperson Sanku Tsunke said it remains unclear if Marubini is armed and dangerous. “Community members are advised to call the police who are trained and capable of apprehending suspects,” he said.
