Truck ploughs through traffic near Montecasino, one person airlifted to hospital

FOURWAYS - Truck driver loses control and ploughs through several vehicles before hitting a wall.

A serious truck accident occurred on the corner Kingfisher Drive and William Nicol Drive, just before Montecasino Boulevard at about 12.45pm.

“What we think happened was that a truck driver lost control [of his vehicle], crashed into a number of other vehicles before eventually crashing into a wall,” said Robert Mulaudzi, media liaison officer for the city’s Emergency Management Services.

“There were nine people injured in the crash, most received minor injuries, but one person did have to be airlifted [to a hospital],” said Mulaudzi.

According to reports, 10 vehicles had been parked when the truck lost control and the flatbed of the truck came to a stop in the car park of an office.

Netcare 911 attended to the scene with the city’s emergency services. Paramedics told JacarandaFM that the 30-year-old truck driver had been trapped in the wreckage. The driver was seriously injured and Netcare 911 spokesman Nick Dollman said the City of Johannesburg’s specialised Heavy Rescue Unit were required to use specialised equipment to free the driver from the truck.
