Hundred new indigenous trees planted in Barbeque Downs
FOURWAYS – A hundred trees planted in honour of Mandela Day in Barbeque Downs. Read here for some exciting news about the local public park.
Barbeque Downs residents celebrated Mandela Day by planting 100 indigenous trees in their newly established public park in collaboration with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.
Candice James, Chairperson of the Barbeque Downs Residents and Ratepayers Association was very excited about the trees and grabbed a shovel to help with the planting process.
The park on the corner of Jubie Road and Candican Road is divided into three areas – a dog park where your canine friend can have his Saturday walk, a play area where you and your children can have a fun-filled play day with swings and other fun activities and the environmental park where a natural wet land was discovered.

The Greater Kyalami Conservancy (Gekco) will do a full analysis of the environmental park and it will be used as a safe haven for different types of species. As soon as they get the green light, owls will be moved to the new location, James explained.
“We want to give the community something to look forward to and somewhere safe to spend quality time with their families,” said James. When the trees grow, she added, it will always be a reminder of Madiba’s vision for his country.
