67 blankets and more for Mandela Day

FOURWAYS– Sector 4 of the Community Police Forum has overachieved on their blanket drive goal for Mandela Day.

Sector 4 of the Community Police Forum (CPF) in collaboration with the Douglasdale Police Station held a special blanket hand-over event on Mandela Day to celebrate the vision of former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Freda Boiles, the chairperson for Sector 4 CPF, announced that they have overachieved the 67 blankets target. While the count is still going up, they have managed to collect approximately 500 blankets. “Half of the blankets will go toward the South African Police Social Crime Prevention Unit and the other half toward the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) Disaster Management Unit.

Boiles thanked all the companies who were involved on the day and gave special thanks to councillor Candice James and the South African Police Service. Captain Mpho Kgasoane, the Douglasdale police spokesperson, said that Mandela Day is the perfect day for voluntary care just like Madiba used to care for South Africa.

“Mandela Day will always mean that we must come together as communities with the police to partner up and to work together, hand in hand,” said Kgasoane.

Gracepoint Church also made their contribution by packaging ‘care bags’ with food and treats. They gave it to the Douglasdale police to thank them for their service and for protecting the community. The Gracepoint children wrote letters of thanks for each ‘care package’ to show their appreciation on Mandela Day.
