Community cleans Witkoppen Spruit Park
FOURWAYS – Bags full of rubbish were collected during the Witkoppen Spruit clean-up for Mandela Day.
Fourways community members gave their 67 minutes of Mandela Day a little early this year. The Community came together at the Witkoppen Spruit Park in Fourways and celebrated Mandela Day with a park clean-up.
Sussan Mottram, estate agent for Re/Max Masters Bryanston, councillor David Foley, Ward 94 branch executive Rod Jones and many friendly neighbourhood faces got up early on Saturday morning, 8 July, to pick up the waste that was lying around in the park.
Jones arrived with his braai tong and was determined to pick up as much litter as possible. Even though the sky was overcast, everyone put on their yellow gloves and got to work after they had a cup of coffee.
Some community members started at the back of the park and worked their way towards the front gate and some started just outside the gate and made sure that the entrance was clean once again.
“It can pour down and we’ll still do it. For more than three hours we scraped away mud and debris [in the parking area], removed dead plants and fallen branches that were thick with thorns, we picked up all sorts of litter inside the park and on the verges outside on Granite Road in Witkoppen Extension 6,” said Mottram.
Mottram thanked the residents and companies who participated in the park clean-up. “Together we filled a truck with bags bursting with rubbish. Not only did we leave the park looking spotless, but old friends got to touch base and new friends got to know each other,” said Mottram.
“An event like this is a great way to build the community and to help make the environment the place you want it to be,” concluded Mottram.
