Donations box placed outside of Broadacres Spar for animals

BROADACRES – Ever wondered about the story behind the donations box outside Broadacres Spar? Find out why it's there by reading here

In late 2005, Ian Tarr was shot and killed outside his father’s Spar store at the Broadacres Shopping Centre on Cedar Road, Fourways.

In memory of him, the store has placed a box for donations for neglected animals near the spot where he lost his life. It is an attempt for some good to come out of such a terrible tragedy. His twin brother Michael still works at the Spar.

“Nelson Mandela once said in a speech that the greatest thing that we can do for South Africa is to create a humane society,” said Klarika Nettleton, also known as Nomsa, who is part of the Bloubosrand Community Forum and who will make sure that the goods get to deserving animals.

“I’m trying to help create that South Africa.”

Witness Nukoyi (kneeling), Sello Moboi, Klarika Nettleton and Edison Mbeczi are the team who look after the donation box and see that all goods get to those who need them.

The donation box is there permanently, and the goods that the public donates will get divided between three nearby squatter camps.

“The trouble is that there are a lot of poor people [in these areas] who love their animals and want to take care of them, but just can’t afford to do so,” said Sello Moboi, who also works at the Spar, watches over the box and has been given permission to take a few of the donations to Diepsloot for the community.

Nettleton, who is available at the donation box at least once a week, said she did this so because of her deep love of animals and her desire to create a more humane South Africa at every level.

“The love and loyalty of animals cannot be matched,” she told the Fourways Review. “We need to treat them properly and we need to make sure that everyone in our society learns how to do the same.”

The public is encouraged to donate goods such as:

  • Dry dog and cat food
  • Tinned dog and cat food
  • Meat sachets
  • Tick and flea powders/dip
  • Vaseline
  • Blankets
  • Any toys and clothes (for children and adults), which Nettleton will take to the squatter camps when she delivers the other goods.

Please feel free to leave your donations in the box outside the Broadacres Spar, or the assigned trolley outside the Douglasdale Shopping Centre Pick n Pay.

If you would like to contact Nettleton to find out how else you can help, please call 072 482 5849
