Climb Mount Kilimanjaro for the Sandton SPCA

SANDTON – Sandton SPCA Mount Kilimanjaro team will take part in an 11km hike through the Soweto koppies.

The team which will summit Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Sandton SCPA will take part in a Soweto koppies hike with Raymond Rampolokeng, who is known as the Birdman of Soweto. He is an avid conservationist and is Soweto’s first trained birding guide.

According to Rampolokeng, “Soweto is viewed as a place with limited activities, not worth spending more than a day in. Tourists are often sold the formal tourism routes such as museums and famous restaurants.”

Some Sandton SPCA adventurers are joining Rampolokeng on 16 July to see another side of Soweto.

The ordinary heroes are based both locally and internationally, who saw the opportunity to tick an item off their bucket lists while expressing their support for the SPCA.

The departure date is looming and the team regularly hikes over weekends to get fit for the expedition. Rampolokeng might show them Soweto but, as a member of the Kili team, he will be the one learning from an expert on how to scale mountains.

This marks a fourth SPCA Kili summit with Adventure Dynamics International (ADI) who has been leading and guiding trips up Kilimanjaro for over 20 years.

The ADI expedition leader, Sean Disney, is a two-time Everest summiteer and has climbed the Seven Summits twice. The Seven Summits are the highest mountains on each of the seven continents.

Disney is one of the world’s most experienced mountain guides and expedition leaders with over twenty years of outdoor and mountaineering experience. He also co-authored the book, Poles Apart with some pointy bits in between and he’s a qualified paragliding pilot, private pilot, open water diver and cyclist.

Climbing to the top of Kilimanjaro might be out of reach for many, but a hike in Soweto with those ready to scale mountains is a possibility!

The public is welcome to join Rampolokeng and the Sandton SPCA team on 16 July.

Hikers will meet at the Orlando Towers at 9 am, take part in the 11km hike and are welcome to stay for lunch in the vibrant Chaf Pozi at Orlando Towers.
