Stop Hunger Now: 1st Fourways Cubs and Meerkats do their part

FOURWAYS – The 1st Fourways Cubs and Meerkats set out to fight hunger among South African children. Find out more here!

Crawford Fourways Preparatory was a hive of activity on the evening of 23 June as the 1st Fourways Cubs and Meerkats spent an hour scooping, weighing, measuring, packaging and sealing meals for Stop Hunger Now.

The group chose to support Stop Hunger Now after they discovered that local children go to bed hungry every day.

The Cubs learned about foods around the world and how to make sushi, Swiss fondues, and a British afternoon tea. They organised a tea to raise the money required to purchase the food that Stop Hunger Now brings along for them to pack.

It is all smiles from the volunteers as they prepare about 4 000 meals to be handed out by the Stop Hunger Now organisation.

To pack the 4 000 meals, the Cubs also raised a whopping R10 000 by obtaining sponsorships for the recent Wally Kohler Cycle Enduro Rally; collecting items from friends and family to raffle, and also organised an event at Crawford Fourways Preparatory School where schoolchildren participated in a Mismatch Day and purchased raffle tickets to win a fidget spinner.

Stop Hunger Now brought the dried food and set up two productions lines in the school hall, where the Cubs and Meerkats challenged each other to pack the most boxes. Afterward, the children were thrilled with what they had achieved.

“Our Cubs and Meerkats had a great time working together and the event was a huge success; they will always remember how they actively helped to feed other children and it is a great lesson for them to get involved in community needs at this early age,” said Akela Charlie Haines who helped supervise the packing.

“We are very grateful to Crawford Fourways and especially principle Ian Rothman for supporting our fundraising efforts and lending us in the school hall.”

Stop Hunger Now estimates that 3.165 million children in South Africa suffer from household hunger. They provide food to more than 173 preschools and early learning centres countrywide to help give those children a good start in life. 1st Fourways requested that the food they packaged be distributed in the local area and Diepsloot.
