And this month’s Top Cop is…

FOURWAYS – Find out who won the Top Cop award for June.

The overall winner of the Top Cop award for June has been announced, and it’s Sergeant Donald Sekomane of Douglasdale police who was nominated for the Best Detective category.

On 8 June, the nominees for the five Top Cop categories gathered at the Auto and General offices in Riversands to find out who would be the overall winner for this month.

The guests enjoyed coffee, fruit kebabs and baked goods in celebration of their achievements, all sponsored by Auto and General as part of its Top Cop initiative, aimed at honouring our local police force.

“Everyone knows that [our officers] get a salary for the work they do,” said Colonel Nyameko Xaba of the South African Police Service Hawks division. “But this prize is aimed at giving more so that the police are encouraged to do more [for the Douglasdale community].

“I just want to say a big thank you to Auto and General for doing this for us.”

The nominees this month are as follows:

  • Best Detective: Sergeant Donald Sekomane
  • Best Visible Policing (External): Sergeant Naledzani Hlungwane
  • Best Visible Policing (Internal): Martyn Jacobs
  • Best Support: Dikeledi Kgampe
  • Best Shift: Echo Relief

Each nominee received an award of R500 and from these five nominations, a winner of the overall Top Cop Award was chosen. This award is given to the nominee who receives the most votes on the Fourways Review website.

As the winner, Sekomane won an additional R3 000. “I’m going to use this money to buy my wife a present,” said Sekomane, which was met with cheers and laughter from his colleagues.

Hlungwane has also decided to be generous with her winnings.

“I’m going to take R100 [from my prize] and buy my colleagues some coffee,” she said. “Then with the rest, I think I’ll take my children out for a nice dinner.”
