Five shacks burn down and claim the life of a man burnt beyond recognition
KYASANDS – Read on what the head of communications at Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Mpho Kgaosane, has to say about leaving appliances unattended.
The incident occured in Kyasands informal settlement in the early hours of the morning of 5 June.
According to the head of communications at Douglasdale Police Station, Captain Mpho Kgaosane, an inquest docket is under investigation. Neighbours estimated the deceased was aged between 28 and 30.
“At the moment the cause of the fire is unknown, however, police investigations are continuing. We, as the police, understand that the drop in temperature means that most of the community will be exposed to cold weather, thus forcing them to use unsafe heating and lighting appliances to warm themselves,” Kgaosane said.
Kgaosane added that they appeal to community members not to leave candles, braziers and paraffin stoves unattended. “These appliances should be used in a well-ventilated area, paraffin stoves should be put on a flat surface where they cannot fall over, and the paraffin must be stored in a safe container,” she concluded.
