DIEPSLOOT– Shumbashaba's Horses Helping People programmes reach out and touch the lives of people in Diepsloot. Read to find out more.

Shumbashaba’s Horse Helping People programme is not your average horse programme as it has helped heal children from Diepsloot for many years.

This is according to Jacky du Plessis of Shumbashaba Community Trust who said they use horses to promote mental and physical well-being.

“The programme has proven to be heartwarming and fulfilling to see as the children grow in this programme,” Du Plessis said.

“Through the programme, they reach out and touch the lives of more than 250 000 people in places where unemployment, poverty and crime are rampant.”

Located at Shillelagh Farm in Diepsloot, Shumbashaba is a non-profit community organisation.

Its therapeutic riding programme offers people with disabilities the opportunity to progress in riding as a sport and recreation, while the non-riding programme offers life skills and counselling using an internationally-recognised methodology to help people restore a sense of self-worth and purpose, key ingredients necessary to improve lives and help people reach their full potential.

When asked who can use the programme, Du Plessis said, “People with or without disabilities are welcome to use the services of Shumbashaba. The income earned from private fee-paying clients is an important source of income which contributes towards running our outreach programmes for participants who cannot afford it. The outstanding funds are raised through fundraising events and donations.”

Shumbashaba Community Trust and Special Olympics South Africa – Gauteng Province will host the Shumbashaba and Special Olympics South Africa on 27 May.

The equestrian event will commence at 9am with the opening ceremony.

Equestrian classes are English equitation, dressage and working trails.

Prize giving is at 2pm, followed by the circle of friendship.

The venue of the event will be at Shumbashaba, 112 Mnandi Road, Diepsloot Agricultural Holdings.

Details: Shumbashaba 084 500 0672.
