FOURWAYS – What can be done to make Fourways traffic more bearable?

Jean Berdou of the Fourways Community Policing Forum writes about what Future City Fourways is doing to address the traffic issues in the area:

Commuting in and around Fourways has gone from being a modest bother to being one of the greatest challenges facing our community in their daily lives. The school runs, access to Fourways Life Hospital, shopping, making business appointments on time and so much more has been thrown into absolute turmoil.

What can be done to alleviate this morass our community finds itself in? How could the community and the impact on them be so low on the developers’ list of considerations?

The developers of the Fourways Mall distance themselves from the problem and the road construction company responsible for all the works have adopted the attitude ‘we have to break some eggs to make an omelette’. Belated apologies and undertakings to complete the work quickly is all we hear.

Future City Fourways has deployed pointsmen during peak traffic hours (excluding weekends) as well as requesting additional JMPD presence, which has resulted in additional deployments, but it’s very clear that this is rather like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound needing stitches.

Future City Fourways has published recommendations for alternative routes to use and times when best to commute but this may not be suitable for many in our community.

The next step is consulting independent traffic experts to look at the present circumstances and advise urgent recommendations. We hope to have these available shortly and will put these recommendations forward to the relevant developers. One thing we wish to make clear to the developers/contractors is you take our community and its interests for granted at your peril. The community is the ultimate customer and it is unacceptable that they have been treated in this manner.
