Fourways anti-Zuma protest gains momentum

FOURWAYS - Residents from Fourways and surrounds have gathered near Fourways Mall to show their distaste for President Jacob Zuma and his recent actions.

About 100 people have gathered along Witkoppen Road, near Fourways Mall, with handmade signs and South African flags. This comes after a peaceful protest, arranged by Future City Fourways and I love Fourways, was declined. Jean Berdou of Future City Fourways released a statement last night on behalf of the group which reads, “Future City Fourways and I Love Fourways make a further announcement this evening and confirm that they are adhering to the decision of the Metro police and City of Johannesburg not to permit the convening of a mass gathering tomorrow, 7 April. That said, we are aware that the public may well choose to conduct their own protests and we urge our community to obey the law, to protest peacefully if they are going to protest, and not gather in groups greater than 15 and such groups must be at least 100m apart. Be safe.”

Natalie Dercksen, who is at the Fourways protest with her family told Fourways Review her family was seriously considerating immigrating to New Zealand, after the upheaval of last week. “I’m very proud that we are coming together as a nation against [Jocob] Zuma. I believe the people must have a say in the running of South Africa. We need to be sure that our children in this country will have a future [here].”

Despite the setback, Fourways residents still managed to unite and arrange their own protest.  Protesters along Witkoppen Road seem to be in good spirits, cheering and waving banners. Passing motorists can be heard hooting in support of the protest, which is increasing in size and gaining momentum.
