Return all your library books ‘fine free’ before April

JOBURG – Get those long overdue books back to your library without paying the fine.

Library week kicked off and the City of Johannesburg’s avid readers were reminded of the fine-free period that has been extended to 1 April.

Maryna Moolman, operational manager of Library and Information Services said, “Library users are urged to return all overdue books to the nearest library. No fines to be paid, no questions asked.”

You can also reinstate your membership when you return the books.

Usually, Moolman said, you get two weeks to return a book before a fine of R5 per week is charged. “We have a maximum charge of R75 per book in fines, after that residents lose their membership,” she said.

But the fine-free period allows residents with long overdue books to return them without paying the fine.

Nonhlanhla Sifumba, the City’s MMC for Community Development said that she hopes all the City’s lost copies will be recovered during the fine-free period and that available funds can be used to buy new books.

Books borrowed from any one of the City’s libraries can be returned to any library.
