Tips to avoid falling prey to smash and grabs at intersections and stop streets

JOBURG - Police offer safety tips to avoid smash and grabs. Read up on how to become a more vigilant driver.

Traffic lights which are out of order tend to cause backlog congestion at intersections which could lead to motorists falling prey to smash and grabs.

According to spokesperson of the Bramley Police Station, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, it is advisable to put your valuables in the boot of your vehicle while driving and to watch out for criminals when approaching stop streets or traffic lights.

Maphakela also issued these tips:

  • If you witness a suspicious person on the sidewalk of the intersection or stop street, look left and right and then drive off
  • If you feel that a criminal activity is about to occur or if you see a criminal about to commit a crime, contact the police or dial 10111
  • Do not offer food or money to window washers, as some tend to become violent if not given what they want, which might lead to them breaking your window and stealing your cellphone or valuables.
  • When stopping at a traffic light or stop street, avoid talking on your cellphone as criminals see it as an opportunity.

“It is very important for motorists to stay vigilant on the roads, at intersections and stop streets. This will deter them from falling prey to crime or smash and grabs,” Maphakela concluded.
